Conference of European Rabbis

Knighthood for Britain’s Chief Rabbi

Print this ArticleLondon - 17-Jun-05

The Conference of European Rabbis warmly congratulates its associate president, Britain's Chief Rabbi Dr Jonathan Sacks, who has been knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Chief Rabbi Sacks received the prestigious honour for his services to the community and his work in promoting interfaith relations.

He described the honour as "not just for me but for the whole Jewish community and its contributions to British life, as well as the continuing inspiration of Jewish teachings."

"I hope it encourages further progress in good relations between the faiths," he added.

A former principal of Jews College, Dr Sacks served as rabbi in the leading London congregations at Marble Arch and Golders Green before succeeding the late and revered Lord Immanuel Jakobovitz as Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth in 1991.   ENDS
