European Rabbis Condemn Gaza Synagogue DesecrationsThe Conference of European Rabbis (CER) expresses its outrage at the disgraceful desecration of synagogues in the Gaza Strip, an activity which calls into question the commitment of the Palestinian Authority to future peaceful co-existence with the State of Israel and the Jewish people. Following Israel’s courageous withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and its immense contribution to building a better future for both peoples in the region, Jews around the world today watched with horror as hundreds of Palestinians set alight and desecrated synagogues throughout the Gaza Strip. "It is tremendously sad that members of one monotheistic faith can act with such repugnance to places of worship belonging to another. We are left with the impression that these people are less motivated by the liberation of their land than by a blind hatred of Jews and Judaism," said CER Executive Director Rabbi Aba Dunner. "This was an opportunity for the Palestinians to prove to the world that symbols and houses of worship belonging to different faiths can co-exist side-by-side. It has taken mere minutes for them to fail this test," Rabbi Dunner added. The CER calls upon the Palestinian Authority to uphold its commitments under international law to protect all places of worship and to pursue and arrest all those responsible for these criminal acts. The Conference of European Rabbis (CER) federates Jewish religious leaders in over 40 European countries and includes all the continent’s chief rabbis and senior rabbinical judges. The CER possesses consultative status as a recognised international NGO at the Council of Europe and within the institutions of the European Union For further information, please contact: Philip Carmel |
