The Conference of European Rabbis expresses concern at the results of the recent referendum in Switzerland banning minarets in the country as an action likely to legitimise limitations on religious freedom.

A motion passed unanimously by the CER Standing Committee said that “effective combat against Islamist fundamentalism is not best served by denying basic religious freedoms."

The CER expressed its particular condemnation of the YES campaign in the referendum which portrayed minarets as missiles and sought to brand all Muslims as dangerous and violent extremists.

“Generating a fear of religious and of all Muslims is not a positive step to building a free and principled society,” the CER said.
