Europe's Jews celebrate the dedication of the Great Synagogue of Europe in Brussels

In a solemn ceremony hosted by the Conference of European Rabbis and the Communauté Israélite de Bruxelles, the main synagogue “La Regence” in Brussels was re-dedicated as “Great Synagogue of Europe” on 4 June 2008. A special plaque was unveiled by the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.
CER Permanent Representative to the European Institutions, Chief Rabbi of Brussels Albert Guigui recited a special Prayer for Europe: “May Europe live happy and prosperous, may it be great and strong through union and concord. May Europe remain faithful to its vocation and defend the rule of law and liberty everywhere."
In his speech to the congregation – which included senior chief rabbis, members of the CER Standing Committee, from a number of European countries, Belgian government ministers, senior EU diplomats and members of the European Parliament – President Barroso called the dedication “a testimony of confidence towards Europe." Unwarranted attacks by foreign organisations condemned
The Conference of European Rabbis (CER) strongly supports the Chief Rabbi of
Poland, Michael Schudrich, in his work preserving and renovating the Jewish cemetery
in Slubice, western Poland. Rabbi Schudrich's work over many years has guaranteed
that previously abandoned sites throughout Poland which were subject to neglect
and deprivation have now been preserved.
Working together with his colleagues in the CER and acting always on the advice
of the most senior halachic authorities in Europe, the United States and Israel,
Rabbi Schudrich has and continues to protect vital objects of Jewish heritage in
Eastern Europe while conforming strictly to the Halachah.
The CER strongly condemns attempts by unrepresentative and extremist groups in
the United States and Israel who have sought to perform the exhumation of Jewish
graves in Slubice and who have been at the forefront of unfounded and false attacks

CER Standing Committee Meeting in Odessa Prioritises Education Projects
The CER Standing Committee has decided to prioritise a number of education projects
across Europe in a wide-range of decisions taken at its meeting in Odessa on May
28-30.
Communities across Europe will benefit from a Day for Youth sponsored by Jewish
communities and CER rabbis stretching across the continent while CER projects to
open Kollelim and Yeshivas will be placed at the top of the organisation’s activities
for the next year.
The prioritising of education projects came amid a remarkable visit to the Odessa
community so ably led by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Baksht and Rabbi Refoel Kruskal whose
own educational institutions were described by CER President Chief Rabbi Yossef
Haim Sitruk as “a model for the whole of Europe, East and West.”
